Extending the Scope

There is considerable potential to make the Irish market a showcase for the sustainable production of food and drink products. Such a showcase can help further protect our resources, enhance our reputation and drive market preference for our products across the globe.

In order to create this showcase we need to have every level of the supply chain involved. We are making strong progress with over 500 food and drink companies already signed up to Origin Green and over 150,000 Origin Green carbon farm assessments completed to date.

Retail & Foodservice Sustainability Charter

In order to extend the scope, and strengthen the impact of Origin Green, Bord Bia has recently developed a sustainability charter for retail and foodservice distributors and operators. The Retailer and Foodservice Sustainability Charter operates in a similar way as Origin Green currently works at company level.

In order to become fully verified members of Origin Green, retailers and foodservice distributors and operators must develop multiannual sustainability plans for their business with clear, measurable targets. The target areas that must be included in these sustainability plans are:

  1. Sustainable Sourcing
  2. Operations
  3. Health & Nutrition
  4. Social Sustainability

These sustainability plans are independently verified by SGS. In addition, verified members must provide an annual progress report which is also independently verified by SGS.

Progress to Date

Following the development of the Retailer and Foodservice Sustainability Charter, Bord Bia contacted a number of key retailers and foodservice distributors and operators to review the content and to pilot the project.

There are now four verified Retail and Foodservice members that are a part of the pilot.

Next Steps

The development of the Retail and Foodservice Charter means that Origin Green on the Irish market will cover all elements of the supply chain to the point where consumers purchase or consume the final product. This coordinated approach will allow the creation of a real showcase to demonstrate how Origin Green can bring a structure to a supply chain and encourage the delivery of measurable improvements in the sustainability performance of a sector.

Bord Bia will actively work with both retail and foodservice distributors and operators who sign up to the Retail & Foodservice Sustainability Charter to provide support and assistance as they work towards becoming fully verified members.
