Raw Materials Sourcing
Wyeth Nutritionals Ireland has well developed Environmental and Health and Safety policies. These include the minimisation of raw materials use; encouraging waste avoidance; exceeding legal compliance; using energy responsibly and efficiently; maintaining an environmental management programme; training and awareness; identifying risks and hazards and mitigating them. It has worked closely with the Irish Dairy Industry to incorporate sustainability into the raw materials procurement process. Wyeth Nutritionals Ireland sources milk powder from local suppliers and has reviewed the sustainability plans of all of its Irish dairy ingredients suppliers and confirmed their SEDEX (Supplier Ethical Data Exchange) accreditation. It encourages all of its suppliers to sign up to Origin Green and for them in turn to support their milk suppliers to participate in SDAS (Sustainable Dairy Assurance Scheme. It purchases packaging with up to 60% recycle content, use water-based inks, and purchase tinplate made with over 70% recycled materials.
Enhancing sustainability is an ongoing journey which Wyeth Nutritionals Ireland has undertaken over the past number of decades. A comprehensive action plan was developed that sought to secure reductions and efficiencies across the manufacturing process whilst also focusing on recycling initiatives on the bulk delivery of raw materials and packaging supplies. This plan is delivering significant achievements and led to considerable reductions in quantities of pallets, bags, cans being used. In addition, by manufacturing its packaging needs on site this significantly cut down on transportation requirements. A part of this plan was to divert waste from landfill started by carrying out an examination of waste streams to identify which waste could be reduced, reused, recycled or recovered. Alternative outlets for waste that resulted in in switching waste from landfill to new and novel waste recovery/recycling outlets were identified. Changes were also made to waste streams that were already being recycled switching them to alternative recycling outlets that are better for the environment. No waste from our manufacturing operations has been sent to landfill for a number of years. Significant savings have been achieved through our Water Use Reduction Programme resulting in water use per tonne of product output reducing by [27%]. This was achieved by installing water metering throughout the factory to identify water saving opportunities and implementing projects to achieve those identified savings, across the system from water treatment to point of use. The current target is to a reduction of 34% of Wyeth Nutrition’s water use per unit of production by 2019.
