About the company

The Foods of Athenry is a specialist 'free-from' bakery, operating two different bakeries on the one site in Athenry, Co Galway. Owners, the Lawless family, have a life-long belief that "good food promotes good health", and the company applies that same simple rule to all its delicious products whether they are vegan, gluten or dairy free. The company develop and manufacture a range of premium gluten free products, while also producing private label cereals and mince pies for multiples, including a seasonal range of mince pies, Christmas cakes and puddings. Products are sold through retail, food service, gifting and airline channels, both for domestic and export markets.

Spotlight Target Area: Waste

For the Foods of Athenry, sustainable development means ensuring that the company's actions today do not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. The Foods of Athenry has made a number of business commitments on increasing operational efficiency and becoming a leader in high quality sustainably produced food. The company demonstrated a strong performance overall throughout 2021, performing particularly well in the target areas of Energy and Waste, subsequently being scored exemplary across these areas. In the target area of Waste, the company achieved a 37% reduction per unit of output across all waste streams and are on course to meet the 43% reduction target by 2025 ahead of schedule. This performance has been driven by the installation and operation of an ERP system, which enables the company to track all food waste products, further streamlining of production processes, and changing all pouches used in the bakery to recyclable materials.
