About the company

Sliabh Liag Distillers have set out to reclaim the rich distilling heritage of Co. Donegal. The company produces three spirits at An Dúlamán Gin Distillery in Carrick, as well as bottling blended Irish Whiskeys, including The Legendary Silkie brand. The next step on the company's ambitious journey is to complete building of the €6m Ardara Distillery, where it will distil pot still and malt whiskeys which will be peated to reflect the type of whiskeys historically made in Donegal in days gone by. Sliabh Liag Distillers export its spirits to four continents and continues to grow annually.

Key Sustainability Commitments

Reducing their Environmental Impact:
Targets are in place to reduce energy and waste by 10% reduction per unit of output by 2021. They have already achieved reductions of 2% year on year to date. Furthermore they have a water reduction target of 12% in place and have achieved a 5% reduction in the first year of their plan.
Focused on Health and Nutrition:
Sliabh Liag Distillers firmly believes that the 'health' of their business is inextricably linked to the health and wellness of their employees. Currently they are engaging with local sports and social clubs through sponsorship while also actively participating. With 9 members of staff, they hope to engage more than half of their employee's in fitness and wellness programmes by 2021 from a baseline of 0% in 2017.


Spotlight Target Area: Packaging
Sliabh Liag Distillers firmly believes in the importance of sustainability in all aspects
of its business. This is reflected by the company ethos whereas its business continues
to expand, its focus on having more efficient production processes is also growing
in tandem. This is reflected in the fact the company demonstrated an exemplary
performance within the target areas of both energy and water throughout 2020,
alongside packaging.
Within the area of packaging, Sliabh Liag Distillers set a target to reduce the amount
of non-biodegradable plastic used in the company’s processors by 70% by 2021. Since
the beginning of the plan, the company have been successful in reducing its nonbiodegradable plastic by 68%. To further reduce usage of non-biodegradable plastic,
the goal is to replace plastic gift packaging with woods and also to return intermediate
bulk containers to suppliers for reuse. The company also compost distilling residue,
both liquid and solid, from its gin still so that nothing is unnecessarily wasted and can
be reused where possible.
