About the company

Folláin was born using a 100-year-old grapefruit marmalade recipe that had been passed down through family generations. 30 years and more than 30 jams later, Folláin are still piping out Jams, Marmalades and Relishes in the family factory in Ballyvourney, Co Cork.

Folláin is the Irish word for wholesome which is at the core of our commitment to honest food made with the purest ingredients to hand. We really believe that preserves have the power to capture nature at its best and that’s what we wanted to share with the world.

Folláin is a premium brand that is trusted in producing superior quality Irish food products that are strongly influenced by traditional recipes and methods. Folláin makes artisan-quality, clean label, natural products are that enjoyed by many, both home and abroad.

Approximately 40 people work with Folláin. And everyone plays a part in bringing the products from ideation to the kitchen table. Whether it’s the New Product Development team trialling different and exciting flavours, the Production team cooking and filling each pot to the brim, the Quality team making sure each pot is up to scratch and the Marketing team making sure it finds its way to the kitchen table, everyone on the Folláin team is instrumental in its success.

Committed to Responsible and Local Sourcing

In the past 5 years, we’ve increased our raw material sourced from Irish suppliers from 18.5% to 31%.

Committed to Reducing Energy

We utilize solar panels on-site as a source of energy. Solar Panels helped generated 11,855 kWh of energy for the facility in 2019 and have likely contributed significantly to carbon emission reductions. We also plan on installing additional solar panels on-site. A planning application has been submitted for the installation of these solar panels.

Promotes Biodiversity

Folláin planted ten new trees around the factory in 2019. This is creating habitats for birds and pollinators and thus increasing biodiversity on the site.

Focus on Health and Nutrition

Folláin’s commitment to wholesome food led to the introduction of a No Added Sugar range in 2007 which is just as sweet as the traditional taste Folláin lovers everywhere are used to. We also launched six new no added sugar products in 2019.

Social Sustainability

Community engagement is very important to Folláin as we try to support those in our community. Such as the Ionad Cultúrtha – who support arts in the Gaeltacht and Local sporting clubs such as the Macroom Trout Angling Club and Ballyvourney Junior Football Club. We made both financial and hamper donations and we continue to support them.

Commitment to Recycling and Sustainability

All cardboard, plastic, wood and glass received from Incoming Goods are all recycled on site. All packaging that is used in Folláin is selected using a sustainable, circular economy thinking and any unnecessary packaging layers have been removed. There was a significant increase in the amount of waste recycled in 2019 as staff training on proper waste segregation was provided. Also, four electric charging points were provided on-site in 2019.

Folláin is the Irish for wholesome and wholesomeness permeates all levels of Folláin’s
business life. Sustainability is an integral part of this wholesome approach to business.
Sustainability has been at the forefront of the company’s latest development, a new
34,000 sq. ft ‘fit for purpose’ and fit for future, energy efficient production facility
to meet the changing market requirements and further the development of new
innovative healthy product lines. Folláin’s commitment to wholesome food led to the
introduction of a No Added Sugar range in 2007. As part of the company’s health and
nutrition target, it set out to launch at least two new products with no added sugar
each year. In 2020, Folláin launched four new no added sugar products, surpassing its
initial target and continuing to demonstrate and embrace the innovation upon which
the company was founded.
